Iced Matcha Latte with Ceremonial Grade Japanese Matcha Recipe

Iced Matcha Latte with Ceremonial Grade Japanese Matcha - IBEV Concepts

This iced matcha latte is made with ceremonial grade matcha from Japan — smooth, vibrant, and naturally sweet with earthy green tea flavor. Whether you're making it at home or behind the café counter, it comes together in minutes with just a few simple ingredients. Dairy-free? It works beautifully with oat milk, almond milk, or soy milk — oat milk gives the creamiest result.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp or 2g of TEAOLOGY® ceremonial grade matcha powder [existing product link — keep as-is]

  • 2 oz (30 ml) hot water (about 175°F or 80°C)

  • 8 oz (240 ml) cold milk of choice (dairy, oat, almond, etc.)

  • 1–2 tsp honey or maple syrup (optional, adjust to taste)

  • Ice cubes

Equipment

  • Small sifter or fine-mesh strainer

  • Bamboo matcha whisk (chasen) or electric frother

  • Wide cup or bowl for whisking

  • Tall glass for serving

  • Long spoon for stirring

Instructions

  1. Sift the matcha: Place your small sifter over the wide cup or bowl. Add 1 tsp of ceremonial grade matcha powder and gently tap or press it through. This prevents clumps.

  2. Add hot water: Pour 1 oz of hot water (about 175°F) over the sifted matcha.

  3. Whisk the matcha: Using your bamboo whisk or electric frother, whisk vigorously in a zig-zag motion until smooth and frothy with no visible clumps.

  4. Sweeten (optional): Add honey or maple syrup to the matcha mixture and whisk again to incorporate.

  5. Prepare your glass: Fill a tall glass with ice cubes.

  6. Add milk: Pour your cold milk of choice over the ice.

  7. Add matcha: Slowly pour the whisked matcha mixture over the milk. Watch as the vibrant green matcha creates beautiful swirls.

  8. Stir and enjoy: Use a long spoon to gently stir the latte. Your iced matcha latte is ready.

Tips

  • For the best flavor, use high-quality ceremonial grade matcha from Japan. The vibrant color and smooth taste make a significant difference.

  • For a sweeter latte, use vanilla-flavored milk or add a splash of vanilla extract with your sweetener.

  • For an extra indulgent treat, top with whipped cream or a sprinkle of matcha powder.

  • To make ahead: prepare the matcha mixture and refrigerate. When ready to serve, give it a quick whisk and pour over ice and milk.

Dairy-Free

This recipe is fully dairy-free friendly. Swap regular milk for oat milk, almond milk, or soy milk. Oat milk is the top pick — its natural creaminess pairs especially well with the earthy sweetness of ceremonial matcha and gives the latte a fuller, café-style body.

Iced Matcha Latte FAQ

What does matcha taste like?

Ceremonial grade matcha has a smooth, grassy flavor with natural umami and a subtle sweetness. It's earthy but not bitter when prepared correctly — at 175°F, the flavor stays bright and balanced rather than sharp or astringent.

What's the difference between ceremonial and regular matcha?

Ceremonial grade matcha is made from the youngest tea leaves, stone-ground into a fine powder. It's smoother, more vibrant in color, and significantly less bitter than culinary grade. For lattes you're drinking straight, ceremonial grade makes a noticeable difference in both taste and color.

Can I make this without a bamboo whisk?

Yes. An electric frother works well and takes less effort. Whisk or froth until there are no visible clumps and the surface is lightly foamy.

Can I make this ahead of time?

You can prepare and refrigerate the whisked matcha mixture in advance. When ready to serve, give it a quick stir or froth, then pour over ice and milk.

Is this recipe dairy-free?

The matcha itself is dairy free. Just substitute dairy milk with oat milk, almond milk, or soy milk. Oat milk gives the richest, creamiest result.
