AZTEC HOT CHOCOLATE HISTORY

What do the Aztecs have to do with hot chocolate?

The Aztec Empire actually discovered their love of cocoa from the Mayans, who were the first known to experiment with the beans. The Aztecs were known for making both hot and cold drinks comprised of cacao, water, and sugar. In addition, they were also known to use other specialty ingredients such as chili powder or vanilla for extra flavoring.

The Aztecs believed that Cocoa Trees came from the gods, and worshipped them with a high regard. In conclusion, Cocoa beans could be used as a commodity in trade, priests drank chocolate water to achieve divinity, and newlyweds drank it during wedding ceremonies.

When Spanish settlers came to the Americas, they noticed how highly the locals regarded chocolate drinks. By growing a following in Europe, the drink was able to create a stronghold that still lasts to this day.
